Was this a local modification for the cameras or a second seat? Notice the brace in the canopy.

Never seen that mod before but take some time and check out the rest of the site. Even if you don't read French, there's enough info to figure it out with a little imagination. Great picture of a Heinkel 111Z towing two gliders

Doesn't look like a modification to me. There is no attachment point at the front where a modification like this would pivot.

Appears that the canopy is off the rails and is just sitting there with the back propped up.

Hello,

The plane is 44-12471, coded R7°Y, converted to piggy-back in the late forties, hence the canopy position.

It may be just that. Can't be sure if the brace inside of the canopy is part of the prop or not, could be. What ever it is, it looks like it was designed for more than one time usage.

Looks like they have swapped the original cross brace for a more 'arched' version to allow headroom. Of course these days its simply deleted altogether on most Mustangs to allow rear seat access. There are a few that have it easily remeovable with pins for the 'stock' look when flown with a single occupant.

besides 44-12471 the French AF also had another a/c with the same modification, i.e. 44-72196.... some sources state that a total of 4 a/c were converted....
