Thu Oct 18, 2007 9:04 am

Who would happen to know names of AP and/or worksop that have modified YAk-11s to be re-engined with P&W R-1830 or R-2000 ? Many thanks for your help !

The Gang at Fighter Rebuilders in Chino put the 1830 on Mr Pond's (at the time) Yak N25YK . It is a real screamer...

Will Whiteside has a R2000 powered racer. Here is a link to their site. http://www.teamsteadfast.com/ :D

It would be good to know the history of our local hot rod Yak's.

Especially our local one with the 1830 and 3 bladed B-24 propeller.

Didn't someone stick an R-2800 on one? That HAD to be a screamer!

Czech Mate. It finished second at Reno this year, piloted by Sherm Smoot.

There was even an R-3350-powered one - 'Mr Awesome', now 'Frostbite'. I seem to remember that it ended up with the tail feathers from a T-33 to try to cure some pretty horendous stability problems.

Mr. Awesome is for sale currently in Trade-A-Plane. I think it may now be located in Arkansas.

I think the one that Fighter Rebuilders did for Bob Pond with the R-1830 might have been one of the first. Don't think they've done another conversion since.

happymeal, are you looking for a shop in the US or in Europe?

Sam Davis has built one.
Joe Haley had several built in Eastern Europe.
I believe the Sanders Brothers did Joe Haley's 1st one.

I was wondering if Dan McCue's Yak might have been one of the first with the R-2000 conversion? it was flying in the late 1980's.
it's now out on the West Coast somewhere. Sweet machine when we had it around the East Coast!

Actually, I am asking for contacts on behalf of french shop that is being contracted to do that mod. The guy knows steve Hinton that he called him, but Steve is pretty busy for now and do not have time to go in details about what it takes to the mod. The shop knows the Yak-11 pretty well as they have overhauled a couple already,a maintains some hevier birds. They just want to know "what not to do", and are looking for contacts.

As mentioned by Robbie, try Will as listed above.

There is an R-1830 conversion Yak-11 on eBay right now. It's been up for auction before, and I believe it was either discussed here or on FlyPast previously.

Warbird Digest #6, Winter '05 had a feature on an R-2000 powered Yak-11, one of the Sanders conversions. It's actually a license-built Czech Let C-11 owned by Dr. Kent Carlomagno, DC of San Rafael, Cal. Joe Haley was the original owner.
Carlomagno formed the Yak Pilots' Assoc and has a newsletter called "the Defector". WD listed his address for anyone interested in Eastern Bloc aircraft.

Anybody got pix of Mr. Awesome?

51fixer,
I believe the Yak I just described is the same one you mentioned as Haleys first one.
