"What’s at Garber

I visited the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility, in Suitland, MD, last week and, contrary to persisting rumors, they did not close up shop when part of the collection stored there was moved to the Udvar-Hazy Center over the past four years. I will tell your more in the next few weeks, but here are some of the exciting restoration projects under way that will result in new exhibits for your enjoyment:

Republic F-105 Thunderchief – rebuilding of the wings and aft section is complete, and the fuselage forward section is in the shop (the canopy and seat are being removed to facilitate cleaning).

Heinkel He219A – The engine is done, and the top of the wing has been cleaned. When the restoration specialists opened the wing they found notes from the Polish slave laborers telling the next factory shifts what they had done that day. This aircraft was transferred to the Smithsonian on 3 January 1949, then was crated and shipped from Park Ridge, MI, to the Suitland, MD, storage facility in early 1955.

Super Connie - We have shown you pictures of the Lockheed Super Constellation (C-121) that is now on the ramp at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Conservation treatment continues, and painting is scheduled to start this month."

Thanks for the update! I'm really curious to see the HE-219 when it is complete. Very interesting!
