Yep...pilot wrote a book about his adventure called 'The Secret of Anzio Bay'. that I really enjoyed.
After they pulled her out, they found rags stuffed in the exhaust, and he ditched her due to overheating, so it was probably a case of sabotage.

Rags in the exhaust?
Maybe rags in the chin radiator which could cause the excesive temps by cutting off the cooling air.
Rags in the exhaust would blow out on start up.
Could have been the mechanic who was soaking up something with them forgot them there.

it's call markings look weird, almost exaggerated. from exposure to the salt water?? bad application to the fuselage??
