The use of zoom has caused much of the depth to disappear. Common issue with using a zoom lens, it flattens the image. We'd need another picture with less zoom to determine whether it was really close or not.

There was 2 airliners crossing over the UK that got prime media attention on the BBC that was later proven to be an illusion again caused by zoom compression where the two planes had almost 3000 feet of vertical separation, but the picture made it look like they were right on top of each other.

Have you ever seen them for real - we're a little more familiar with their abilities and professionalism over here in the UK. Your thread title will give the totally wrong impression - have a look at their website for the details of that planned manoeuvre. The lens certainly compresses perspective and can mislead. I wonder what you make of this shot from their own site!

Isn't the whole purpose of this maneuver to make it look like a near miss?

Actually, a "near miss" means they nearly missed each other, implying that they actually hit each other. Isn't it really a "near collision." I'm so confused.

This thread serves no purpose but to cause confusion. The picture is of a standard part of the Reds display - something they have been doing for years. I saw the actual display in question and it was quite normal.

Did anyone else notice this?
The only one that worries me in the slightest is the Pattriots over Pittsburg.
It appears to be a belly to belly pass. I know they are seperated but this just seems to add a little more risk than is necessary. I did not see the display so I am just guessing it was an opposing head to head with either a knife edge pass or a complete roll with the 90 degree position at the pass. Either way you end up with no vis on the other aircraft for a brief moment.

Thoughts?
