that beard must have raised the dander of alot of marine brass big shots!!! truly impressive back drop, numbers just don't cut it as to their contribution to the war effort, that backdrop has impact !!

he may have had a medical condition that excused him for it. I know a lot of guys couldn't shave or their hair follicles curled the hair into their necks and got infected...maybe he had the same problem?

How about just that a lot of them grew breads out there with
Blackburn's OK. He was more of a results type guy.

In the Royal Navy, a 'full set' (beard and moustache) are acceptable. As the US Marines are obviously just a colonial copy of the Royal Marines, maybe...
