Everyone should llisten to Bud's impression of flying a Spitfire. The part about "flying on the wing more than than the engine" is just llke I would describe it. Of course when you need it, there is plently of engine there also. It never occurred to me to be so concerned about having a non steering tailwheel. It was that way when I learned to fly it and I assumed if all Spitfires were built that way then it must work well and nothing else was needed. I do recall one American rebiulder who wanted to put a steerable tailwheel and a manual mixture control in a Spitfire.I which Spit Bud got to fly?
Bill,
Budd said he lost track of that Spit. Said the owner was killed in a Mustang years ago.
