Warbird Information Exchange

Does anyone have a interest in where choppers are located that the Army loans out? Like VFW's and American Legions?? The Army does not give Aircraft to anyone as far as I know, its just on loan... please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm interested - if it flies (or used to!) I'm always interested.

I believe several different Agency's can own the item, TACOM, CMH and I guess the Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard all seem to have a hand in this. Has anyone ever seen a Air Force or Navy list of donated items??

There are seperate lists for each branch.

TACOM is in charge of all Army loans.

NMUSAF controls AF loans.

NMNA controls Navy loans.

There is also a program set aside for any public entity, VFW or American Legion. It is seperate and is run out of an office at AMARC. Or at least it used to be.

Nothing is given away, it is always a loan with title remaining with the govt. They can take it away anytime someone makes the decision without regard to whatever has been put into the item since loan.

If you have access to a list of such equipment at VFWs and Legions I would very much like a copy. I would like to integrate it into the Locator.

i know there is a Huey late 70's model in Bedford mass at Wyotech ( East Coast Aero Tech) and it runs and everything. I got to go on it and be in it when it ran up, but we weren't allowed to leave the ground b/c it's missing a data plate on it. Kinda lame seeing how when i was on tour for the school the guide told me i would be able to fly in it.

I was helping the 555 (not the 55th)VVa here in newark with thier huey. They have an interesting thing going with TACOM.

TACOM claims it owns the bird, but can not prove it. The post has a document from the state of Ohio giving them the bird.

The serial number that was on it till recently is the one that was on it when the post recieved it and is the same on thier paperwork from the state. However; it is NOT the same serial that TACOM claims belongs to the airframe. Since the date plate was taken as part of the de-milling process both sides were kinda up a tree.

TACOM at one point wanted to take it back real badly, but could not really prove it owned the airframe. They reached a compromise and TACOM agreed to provide some maintenance incentives.

Another ownership problem. There is an old M4 sherman in Whitehall Oh. in front of what was a VFW post. It is kinda an eyesore, but; no one knows who owns it. Seems it is not on the states or the USFPO property books.

The Huey at DCSC in Columbus ticks me off every time I look at it. A few years back we had an SOF regarding mast failures. They grounded the whole fleet because of this and scrapped every mast in inventory. WE were finally approved to recieve a few new mast and I spent a couple of weeks getting this aircraft back togeather; as it was selected to remain inservice because it was a low time bird.

I installed a new mast, 42 degree gear box and we had a new N2 Spur gear installed in the engine.

Nine months later it is on outdoor display! Our tax money at work!
