I'm looking for info on the round Spitfire mirrors mounted on the P-51. Does anybody know the dimensions of the mirror, or have any closeup pics of it mounted on the P-51.

Thanks,

Mac

I don't have specific info, but there is a 'close' shot on this page:

(be sure to scroll down to the bottom - where the 'close' shot is...)

The mounting bracket for this type of mirror on a P-51 was improvised by the groundcrew. A subtlety of the mirror is that the housing is not a perfect hemisphere but slightly 'bulged' at the lower side.

Send me a PM and I'll send you a pdf file of scale drawings of the Spit version.

It was a cast aluminum support with a brass "dome". about 4" diam.

I have a one piece cast replica and am making a better one. Mark V is right that it is not a perfect dome but bulges toward the bottom. It has holes in the side for tightening the bolt that holds it to the support.

There are many versions out there.

There was one on ebay this week. Pricey - it did not get an initial bid.

More years ago than I care to remember I supplied a couple of these to Elmer Ward for a P-51 he had or was working on.

Thanks for the info, guys. I looked on ebay, but could only find ones for the Truimph Spitfire.

Also, PMs sent to Rich & Dave.

Thanks again,

Mac
