If there ever was a prime candidate for a new-production warbird, this would be one of my prime choices. It's a very attractive plane, and it's also small which should make it exponentially easier to reproduce IMO.

The only problem I'd forsee would be the sourcing of a suitable powerplant that wouldn't alter the external appearance of the plane.

Well, a DB-601 should fit without much (if any) modification...

Frank Taylor had one of these in Chino years ago- I think Kermit Weeks has it now. Looked like it would be easy to build since it didn't appear to have many special extrusions. Mostly made from bent and rolled sheet metal shapes.

Really? I know the Santa Monica Museum had one in '91, but no one seems to know where it went. Actually, it would seem like a lot of fun to rebuild..

okay, just looked at the site which started all this

and one of the airframes shown either is a massively rebuilt example of what I have seen at classic jets ( about 5 minutes down the road from me ) or a second example. the one bit I know they had before was not much more than a very corroded cockpit section found in a scrap dealers yard against the fence and was missed the first few times through the yard if what I remember is accurate.

the one I remember as being there would end just at the end of where it looks like the cockpit glazing ends so a bit more like the bottom example so I have no idea about the airframe in the top pics. looking closer I am sure the bottom set of images is from classic jets though as I can't think anywhere else you might find a 'tony' and a mirage in the same place

I can say though that the very top pics which are labelled " main wing of the type 3 in the hanger " are NOT taken at classic jets. hangar roof is the wrong shape for one. never seen 2 winjeels, and what looks like it might be a wirraway, there for 2 and much bigger seeming than the hangar at Parafield for 3.

Dave, you're saying it's been in Russia for about 12 years? Something must be wrong. I even asked the Planes of Fame management about it, and they said they didn't know anything either.

I don't know how long, it could well have been in storage at Santa Monica for years prior to a deal being struck in Russia, Price and co. aren't exactly talkative about their 'deals'

Hi all,I posted on this subject a while ago and got minimal interest.Rob,I agree,the DB601 could be used as the engine,I believe MoF had at least 1 complete and 1 semi-complete airframe,also Kermit has an intact airframe,there are 2 sections of fuse in Oz (Wangaratta & Parafield).Come on Herb T,nows the time to start looking for something else to do!!!Cheers.Pete

I think I've already told you about a different shot or two of the Chiran Tony I've seen in magazines, but the display space there is so small and the ceiling so low that I'm not sure any other angles are practically possible.

Now about the second photo you just posted: Do you happen to know if it is the Tony of Sgt. Matsumi Nakano after his B-29 ramming flight of Dec. 3, 1944?
