Gang, the WW2 AAF Classic "A GUY NAMED JOE" will air Today (Saturday) at 2pm Eastern on TCM.
This film was made in 1943 & has some AWESOME brand new AAF P-38 scenes. Here's the original trailer:

There's several slow spots in it, but be sure to stick around for the second hour. The crystal clear, razor sharp P-38 scenes are well worth waiting for!! Including the final scene, where Van Johnson's wife jumps in a fully armed P-38 & destroys a Japanese Supply Base. Ha! Ha! This is a Great WW2 AAF propaganda film. I've seen the Speilberg remake many times, but I think I've only seen the original maybe once, and that was years ago. Unfortunately, our crappy cable system in this town doesn't have TCM.

Yes Digger, great stuff! I wonder who flew the actual P-38 scene. I don't have
a copy of "When Hollywood Ruled The Skys" handy right now...I wonder if it's
mentioned in there. Possibly LeVier, Hoover, or the fellow LeVier replaced...
or I suppose an Air Corps pilot.

I've seen this film tons of times since I was a kid, and I'm amazed at what I've
forgotten or didn't realize what is in the background. At the start of the movie when
Joe and Yackey(Ward Bond) are waiting for Dorinda's "grand entrance" in the PT-19, in the
background in the hangar appears to be a Beech D-18. Later, after her landing she parks the
'19 in front of what appears to be a D-18 with a sliding canopy...they're both actually
Beech AT-10's..mostly wooden twin engine trainer without the twin rudders.
Just a detail for those unaware of the type...lotta great background stuff in this film
for airplane nuts! Thanks for the heads up!
