Aviation caps

Sun Jan 18, 2009 3:52 pm

T shirts are easy to come by with airplanes on them. I'd like to find a ball cap with a Pratt& Whitney or Wright Cyclone patch. Sew-on patches would be cool too. Anybody got any leads or links on this?

That's easy, you just go to your local Pratt & Whitney Store!

One of my neighbors I spotted recently wearing a Navy Cap and a Pratt and Whitney Jacket. I asked about it, he got out of the Navy after WW2 and then spent 25 years with P&W co. I need to catch up with him again and see if he has any "mementos" .

Hmmm,
I just got a new hat at the NBAA event held in our hangar. I have an old one that is covered in 2380 too.

A couple of years ago a tech rep came in handing out the 15" stickers, I didnt get one. :(

My favorite is the large Rolls Royce sticker I got a couple of years ago, it came free with the Overhaul of a Tay. Whatever you do, dont try to start your G-IV when it is -15F, it will overtemp!

Thanks guys, sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

krlang, thanks for the factoid but I don't plan to be doing anything anywhere thats' -15F yikes!

OOOOO! Good stuff! There's a couple of hundred bux worth that I really need to have. ...really.
Any ideas for Wright Cyclone? I have a t-shirt I made that says "Who needs a HEMI when you can have Wright Cyclones?" Unfortunately I was wearing it a couple of years ago when the Thunderbird crapped an engine running up to fly to an airshow. I've been asked not to wear it there any more. lol.

I got a grey "Members Only" style jacket with the P&W logo on it from 1990. If you want it juts pay the shipping and it's yours!

About a century ago I bought a ballcap with a WRIGHT ENGINES embroidered patch on it from, I think, YELLOW ROSE. The patch has been transfered a few times to newer caps as the original cap long ago wore out.

I haven't seen that patch again, does the lack of what used to be a thriving patch business 20+ years ago have anything to do with everyone wanting a 'marketing license' for everything?

And why is everyone GA GA over P&W patches? Is it because they are about the only game in town?

Lets see someone market patches from long gone manufacturers like WACO, ALLISON, MESSERSCHMITT, ARADO, etc. I know from experience that the initial set up costs for a patch or embroidered cap are very expensive, but after patch #2, they cost about 5 cents apiece to stitch up.

I got a Navy Blue PW Cap at the 1997 Ottawa National Capital Air Show. It has been thoroughly soaked in 5606 Hydrailc Fluid, Aeroshell 120 and 120W, and AVGas 100LL.

It still works just fine..

Inspector, I like your suggestion of other brand patches. Actually I'd rather have a Wright Cyclone patch than P&W but I wouldnt turn down any brand. How about Consolidated?

Kevin, your hat has character. Like the '50 mission crush', 'six week coveralls'. I have a pretty skanky LS hat with pins on it that I call "the fifty mission grease job" I assume you wear that hat at airshows and on flights. It makes ya' look like a veteran.

It does have character, but not from airshows and flights...

We have a very strict uniform policy. Burgundy Flightsuit, Black Hat with C-54 on it, black boots etc.

We believe that in order to pay respect to one of the most organized events in aviation history, we should reflect that kind of standardization.

PLUS, with the rather noticeable burgundy flightsuits, you can see who is f***ing off from across the ramp.

The PW hat has served me though 12 years of maintenance, plane washings, one flight (Maintenance related) and through much of the restoration of my 1943 Willys MB. When its time to part with it, I think I''ll burn it. (then again, it might explode.)

Sounds like it might be able and justified in leaving you! Careful it doesn't get your savings.

Hey y'all...

For what it's worth, we finally reissued our popular Steve Canyon military-style high-quality caps from 2007...they commemorate creator (Canyon and Terry & The Pirates) Milton Caniff's 100th birthday and Steve Canyon's 60th.

ALthough we are not in the business to sell hats, we have been consistently pestered by a bunch of persistent folks to make some more...sooo...I just thought some of you on this thread (pun intended!) might be interested...
