Anyone remember a 7/10 scale P-51 B/C with a 12cyl. Ranger engine in it?
I saw it at Oshkosh 15-20 years ago maybe??? Is it still around, any performance stats on it, pics?

Regards,
Mike

I've got some slides of it somewhere. It was 1984 or later, Maybe 86 or so, Silver with 352nd blue nose. Of all things, I just saw it for sale at BARNSTORMERS, TRADEAPLANE, OR CONTROLLER. COM. Hadn't thought about it in years until I saw it for sale.

I understand the owner stopped taking it to airshows because he was sick of being asked what the serial number of the carb was

Just to keep this on-topic, is this the aircraft you were thinking of?

Thats not the one. It was a B Model (or C however you want to look at it). I looked at the 3 sites I mentioned above and didn't see it. I also looked at EBAY closed auctions, wasn't there either.

I recall that it was a really nice looking airplane.

Hi--

I remember this one. One of the mags had a short blurb on it with a couple photos. I recall the text saying the fellow who built the aircraft had first acquired a Ranger V12, and mulling over what to do with such an engine, decided a near-fullsize P-51B was the answer. ("Far on the other side of common sense", or something like that, was the comment!) The other detail I recall distinctly was that the replica was 9/10, not 7/10 scale.

It's possible I still have the magazine in question...will have to take a look in my basement. (Yikes...)

S.

Seems I remember an add for plans in the back of the EAA magazine many years ago for a Ranger powered, B model Mustang.

I remember seeing a scale version at some UK airshow many years ago & the owner was a bit miffed when his offer of a flight to a very well known UK collector was met with "No thanks, it smells of coffin" LOL!

I don't think so on the N51BM, I found a pic of it on the web and I remember the airplane as a lot bigger.

Oakey dokey Mark...is that link available? I understand in the thread we're
talking a 9/10's replica with a V-12 Ranger. I was curious as to the N number of the
one on the magazine for clarification. Good luck on finding the slides!

I Googled N51BM and came up with this. I recall the airplane as being much better proportioned and a lot bigger than the 2/3 P-51s (larger than a Stewart S-51 by a good deal)

If it helps, I'm pretty sure it was there the same year (1986) as the "Prowler", which was a metal Spit/P-40 combo which was a pretty nice looking plane.
