The Es were withdrawn from the Pacific as the B-24
replaced them in combat zones by 1943.

The B-17E made the first 8th Air Force mission over Europe
on Aug. 12, 1942, but their combat career was short, as
they were soon replaced by B-17Fs.

Some Es served in the Coastal Command, but I do not
know their service history.

combat time period of B-17E and F models.

I think the latest that f models flew combat missions with the 8th AF was mid 44. Would you want to fly combat in an old plane or new plane? By this time the countryside in England was getting covered up with new B-17s sitting at depots ready to go to operational units. Cant beat an F model for speed and beauty can ya? And yes Bill the shark fin was faster and just as beautiful

As long as it stayed on the plane.

Looked good, came off once in awhile.
