BURIED WRECKAGE INVESTIGATED

Construction workers digging a water line trench near Watsonville, Calif., last week unearthed a chunk of riveted metal, some bullet casings dated 1942 and part of a burned parachute. And now the town is buzzing about what might be buried there. Various local authorities, along with officials from Travis Air Force Base, are now examining the contents of the hole to see what it is and if it’s safe to bring it into the light of day. "There's definitely a piece of history there, whatever it is," Kenny Lazzerini, who owns the strawberry farm on which the wreckage was found, told the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

that sounds pretty exciting. I'm very interested in seeing what comes of this. Does anyone have any WWII accident reports in the area?

Cheers,

David

I remember when I was staying with a friend of mine in the RAF. He was stationed on base housing at the now closed RAF Swanton-Morley. His back garden was all of 15' by 12' in size. On a lark we decided to use his metal detector. We had so many hits in that tiny patch of grass that we'd have had to dig the whole thing to get them all up. amunition casings, and lots of small but interesting aircraft bits. It was great fun poking around. We had to be very careful not to damage the grass too much... just pealing it back to find what was underneath.

I wonder what could be in the hole at this site though?

Cheers,
Richard

hahaha...

chances are... all they'll come up with is a small piece of metal that could belong to a twin-engine similar to what Amelia flew, as well as a piece of fabric that was probably part of a shirt that may or may not have been worn by a woman around the same age as Amelia.

Let's hope they stay out of it.

Cheers,

David
