Quad Cities Airshow- Ju52 tail wheel broke (pics)

Sat Jun 02, 2007 10:08 pm

Just got back from the Quad Cities Airshow in Davenport, Iowa. I was surprised to see the Great Lakes Wing's Ju52. Even more surprising was the damage to the tail wheel it suffered upon landing at Davenport. Later in the day they removed the rudder which looks like it took bit of damage as well. Nevertheless, I took the $3 tour and deposited a few dollars in their donations jar
Below are some pics. Some of my other pics from the day follow.

Did B-25 "Show Me" make it?

Great pics! Was a B-25 scheduled?

Very sad to hear about the JU-52. I'm glad it was not worse. I hope it they can repair it soon.

Nope, no B-25s. I was kinda expected Miss Mitchell to be there since it's not that far away and she was there last year giving rides. The bargain of the day was Gooney rides for $95 versus $1500 in a corsair. Not sure of there were any takers on the Corsair rides on Saturday.

According to CAF MO's website Show Me was supposed to be their. That Corsair ride is $500 more than it is here in Valparaiso at the museum HQ.

I'd second that. The only good thing about a tailwheel failure, which often causes further damage, is that it's not a nosewheel - small comfort, but some.

I thought those 'ol JU-52s were indestructable. Too bad, hope they can fix it without too much trouble. I always wondered whatever happened to Martin Caidin's old "Iron Annie"? Great book, "The Saga of Iron Annie". 8)

Good shots. The C-47 with the prop vapor is a cool one! 8)

I uploaded the rest of my photos. Trying out the new zoom camera. Lots of pictures of The Thunderbirds routine.

Marty Caidin's Ju, "Iron Annie" is still flying. He sold it to Lufthansa, and it's flying in Germany as D-AQUI.

To my knowledge, it's the last Dessau built Ju-52 flying. I'm pretty sure all the other Ju's flying are CASA 352's.

Sounds like "Show Me" is down with a bad engine (Not sure what happened to it). Miss Mitchell was offered as a back up but I'm told the show promoter declined in order to save some money.

What Really Happened to the JU

Mon Jun 04, 2007 4:55 pm

The Ju was being towed a short distance by tractor through a grassy area. The tug temporarily lurched, breaking the tail wheel assembly.

It did not happen on landing!

lucky it occured when it did, then.
