Mustang Registry search help?

Tue Jul 03, 2007 1:51 pm

I met a friend of a customer of mine and and was quite suprised when he told me he bought a P-51 2 seater from Paraguay in the late '60s for $3700! He sold it in '72 for $400k because he couldn't afford the insurance anymore, which at the time was 10% of the value of the plane. It had a black and white checkered tail but he didn't remember the Bu No.

Does this aircraft sound familar? I want to look up the info and get some pics of what it looks like today to show him.

How do I find it in the registry? Do the 2 seaters have a special area? I wasn't able to determine which section. They were TF-51, correct? Help please!

That would be $400.000 in 1972? Excuse me for saying so, but I think you've got a "bulls**ter supremo" here. And who operated a Mustang in Paraguay? It sure wasn't the Air Force. And I'm fairly certain that there was no civilian 51 there either.

In 1970 the going price for a Spitfire was £12,500 which at today's exchange rate is $25,000 USD. It was a better rate then for the dollar as I recall.

A Mustang was reckoned to be about 75% the value of a Spitfire, so in 1972 you could say a Mustang was +/- on $20,000 for an average example.

1) Paraguay never operated P-51s in military service

2) A search of the entire Mustangamustangs website for the word 'Paraguay' brings up no returns, and......

3) A search of the WRG Registry for the word 'Paraguay' brings up no returns under P-51s

Which leads me to believe that there has never been a military or civilian P-51 operated in Paraguay.

Coupled with the inflated sale price quoted, this makes whe whole story sound very unlikely.

If he doesn't remember the SN, then he has to remember the N number! What P-51 owner wouldn't remember their own N number!?
