Fighter Town USA hangar

Wed Jul 04, 2007 1:17 am

Does any one have any pics of the Fightertown U.S.A. hangar that is seen in Top Gun? I am not sure how long the lettering was up on the hangars for. I know there are many on here that know a lot more about it than me. Thanks.

Mustangdriver,
I don't know if the Marines have left the wording on the hangar since they took over Miramar but it was there back in the late 70's. Yep, long before "Top Gun" was even conceived. That was back in the day when the Phantoms and photo Crusaders shared the ramp with the Tomcats.

I grew up next to Miramar. Many of my neighbors were Navy pilots. My next door neighbor ended up becoming a test pilot for the navy flying both fixed and rotor winged aircraft. He retired from the Navy and flew SR-71's for NASA until just a few years ago. He was scheduled to make the very last SR-71 flight. Unfortunately the bird had a mechanical problem and they scrubbed the flight.

I believe the lettering was put up in the very late 60's or early 70's. I'll check and see if I have any pics of it in my Miramar airshow pics. If I do I'll scan it and post it.
