Wow, that's tragic. Jack, do you know anything about the circumstances or the location? It's a shame you can't see the NZ number fully.

Thanks for posting it. Nice to see an RNZAF Corsair on here, even if it is in a very bad state. I hope the pilot got out.

Fighter 2 airfield on Guadalcanal around Feb. 1944 or so. P-38s of the 44th Fs can be seen in the background. note that this is a very early production -1A.

Thanks Jack. I posted a link to this thread onto my forum, and aviation historian Peter Lewis rightly points out it must be laterthan March 1944 as that is when the first batch of these aircraft for the RNZAf left the USA. He suggests it's quite possibly NZ5224 - which crashed on landing from a training flight at Guadalcanal on the 20th of May 1944. The pilot was Sgt I G Field

It is a little later has one of P-38s is in NMF. The pilot who gave me the pictures said it was a couple months before the 44th FS left for New Guinea which was in Aug 44.

I guess that ties in nicely with that 20th of May crash then.

Is that dark rectangle on the bottom of the fuselage the plexiglas window that early Corsairs had?
