Robert Grey Air Field

Greetings
I have a ? for the group Was Robert Grey Airfield used in WW2 ? I know that is was named after one of Dolittle Raiders Robert Grey , their is also a Street in Downtown Killeen TX named Grey St after him. I was told that he was a local home grown Hero. The Airfield is located in present day Fort Hood TX . During WW 2 it was known as Camp Hood . the Runway is well over mile maybe 2 long. I understand that it is # 3 on the list for the Shuttle landing if it came to that . The reason that I ask is I recently came into finding a ( Dummy ) contact areal bomb maybe a 200Lb that was stamp Camp Hood AAF. can anybody bring light on the mystery ?

where is Grey Street? I was stationed at hood for a while...I don't remember all the main streets, but...

First off, its sspelled "Gray" not grey.

Gray airfield was not around during WWII, as West Ft Hood didn't come about until the cold war. It was originally a USAF Base. Nuclear weapons were stored in the ammo bunkers near the field at that time. Bergstrom AFB in Austin was a SAC base at that time also.

Hood Army Airfield was always located at its present position north of 38th Street (W S Young). I can remember being at the Killeen Drive In on Rancier Ave seeing fixed wing aircraft on short final to Hood AAF in the early 70's. Aircraft included C-45's, U-8's, U-21's and OV-10's.

When I was flying aircraft in the Ft Hood Flying Club at the Killeen Municipal airport, we got our av-gas tanker truck refilled at the Hood POL dump. This was as late as 1973.
