still needs to be saved !
Gary ( retroavation ) is PERSANALLY bidding on the aircraft just to save it, he may need help if he falls short in the funds department after it turns out that the CAF no longer own it & it is being auctioned off & so COULD be scrapped.

Yep, that's the one. It's embarrassing, but it seems that I had been given inaccurate information when I had discussed this with folks here at CAF HQ when I made the earlier posts. The guy I got the info from (who was in charge of the PBY issue) thought the airplane still belonged to us, when in reality, the City of Brownsville took possession of it after all several years ago.

Without getting into the gory details, all I can say is that I am still trying to keep the airplane from getting scrapped and have been bidding on it personally. IF I'm able to get the airplane, I will see that it goes to a better home somewhere. I reckon we'll just have to wait until the auction is over to see what happens.

There is still lots of time between now and when the auction ends. I'm just going to let it simmer for a bit before I get too excited about this. I am hopeful that this will all work out, but we'll worry about that a little later. I have lots of other self-induced problems that need my attention in the mean time.

Although I can't get into all of the politics of it, the city (as far as I know) basically considered the aircraft "derelict" and took possession of it that way. They also have two DC-3's that are up for auction as well that I assume were done the same way.

Here are some pics of the PBY being airlifted to the Brownsville airport. This was the second try at it, the first having too short of a lift strap, or so I was told.

My notes say this was sometime in 1993

Well folks, it's unfortunately going to have to be someone else that saves this PBY from the potential purchase of a scrap dealer. I have had some personal issues come up that will make it impossible for me to continue bidding on the airplane as I had hoped. It is still very affordable and the museum I was working with is still interested in the airplane. If one of you end up bidding on, and winning the airplane and wonder what you're going to do with it then, get with me and I'll make sure that you get in touch with the folks that want to take care of it. It is simply not in their budgets to purchase it themselves, but they will possibly consider some sort of trade. That will be between you and them.

I hope that the airplane ends up in the right hands. I have tried everything in my power to save it, but with these issues of mine that popped up just this past week, I will not be able to continue.

I really hope this bird gets saved. Even if it took the next hundred years to whip her back into shape. It wouldn't be a wasted hundred years. It sure beats the prospect of losing her to the torch, forever.

I admit I even played with the idea of buying her at that price. But it the logistics of bringing her to ohio that kept the idea in my head.

I know strap a couple of outboards on her or maybe mount the Corvair engine I got and a prop and float her up the Mississippi to the Ohio and pull her out at Cinnci. Ya know with plenty of tubes of RTV/Sealer and a couple of buckets it just might wo........Ok bad idea. :wink:

Save this girl the price is right.

Anyone know any details about this yet?

I hope she was saved and that wasn't picked up by a scrapper.

If this is the case then hopefully Mark will reign in and give us the scoop.

It will be interesting to see how they plan to transport it downunder, if that is the case.
