C-130 Landing & taking off from a Aircraft Carrier

The other night I visiting with my uncle and he informed me that in the late 50's early 60's that the Navy was doing some Test of how well a C-130 could be used on a Carrier ! I raised a eye to that one But I figured that the Wixer' s would have the truth the whole truth and nothing but the well you get my meaning. Dose anybody have facts of this happening or pictures ?

The is a book that I believe is titled "HERK". It has picture of a C-130 on the deck of a carrier.

Yep, Early sixties aboard the foressetal.. It scared them a little so the devloped the C-2

I agree that the Navy made it happen, that is a landing for sure. The crew were awarded DFC's for the feat. I do not believe that they tried a take-off.

Didn't the C-130 have the words
"Look, Mom, No hook!"
written on the side, as they used propeller
braking on the landing?

Back in the 60's they delivered four C130B models to to our base in River's Manitoba. The discussion got around to the climb rates compared to the T33 also stationed there. Some one figured out that the Herc could outclimb the T33 I believe it was up to 4,000 feet. Can't recall the stats now but would anyone be able to confirm. They did try it but I can't recall the results.

The Navy was delighted to discover that even with a maximum payload, the plane used only 745 feet for takeoff and 460 feet for landing roll.

I saw the pix of Flatleys Herk a couple of years ago on another website. The member who posted it knew Flatley. He said that the main cause for concern was the wingspan of the Herk that cleared the carrier island by only eight or ten feet. Other than that, the Herk proponents proved their point. Still an awesome airplane!

On an episode of "JAG", they had Harm land a C-130 on a carrier. Prior to rolling the credits, they showed the actual footage of the real C-130 landing on the carrier (I thought it was the Ranger, myself), and a tribute to the crew that performed that feat.
Some of the episode plots on JAG were occasionally implausible, especially as the series wore on, but they somehow always seem to manage to give credit to those who really deserved it in real life.
