CWH Flyfest

Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:30 pm

The CWH Flyfest was a fun time today and took me back to the old CWH days before they moved into the new hangar. Lots of flying and fun. I saw more CWH aircraft take to the air today then I’ve seen in a long time and they entertained the best they could with the “museum pass” restriction. Add to this aircraft from the Fighter Factory in Virginia, Vintage Wings of Canada in Gatineau and the Russell Group in Niagara Falls and it was a well rounded event.

Nice photos Eric. Do you know who the pilots were of VWoC Corsair, and FF P-51?

Cheers.

None other then Mike Potter and Jerry Yagen. As soon as the Corsair arrived Mike was checked out on it. My surprise was Rick Volker flying Russell's Spitfire.

Thanks... Jeez everyone is getting a crack at the Russell aircraft. I guess you never have a shortage of pilots willing to fly those beauties.
Things look to be improving at CWH, at least flying wise, since Mr Franks left.

Eric,

Good stuff, like others on your website as well.
You are going to have to tell me about those shots
looking down on the parked a/c.

wls3. there is a raised observation room at Hamilton that is part of the museum. I suspect that this is where the overhead shots came from.

Eric....At Russell's place last Saturday (09Jun) I saw Volker sitting in the Spit cockpit for about an hour with John Romain on the wing root giving him the grand tour of the cockpit. Of course I couldn't hear what they were talking about but it sure looked like a thorough cockpit briefing to me. A short time later, Volker was taxi-ing the Spitfire.

If Volker is checked out, I believe that makes two Local guys that can fly Russell's birds....Volker and Rob Gilman.

Yes, it is about time some local guys got checked out. Maybe we will see the aircraft attend more events. It is a shame Leon Evans has left the group as he is an excellent pilot. I was always surprised Pete Spence, Kent Beckham and Dave Hewitt (Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team) were never allowed to get checked out on Russell’s birds as you can’t ask for more professional pilots. As a side note Pete and Kent soloed Mike Potter’s Spitfire recently up in Gatineau.

Greg, I see the Anson, CF-HOT, was being worked on. Do you know what the story is behind the work. Will the museum put it back into the air? I sure do miss seeing it fly and it would be great to see it back in the air.

Eric, great stuff as always. Was a good day and I enjoy seeing some familiar faces ( Steve T, Parr Y ) Looks like in the near future we will see a all Ontario warbird show some were down the road with VWoC, Russell, CWH etc.

Here is a link to some of my images http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b165/ ... st%202007/

The wifw grabed up some good video and will get to it when time permits for the WIXers that could not be their.

Cheers Dave C

Hey Dave VWoC is in Quebec not Ontario! So we would have to make it an all Ontario/Quebec warbird show.

Fantastic work as always Eric! Look forward to catching up with you on the grass in a few weeks!

I tell you, it brings a tear to my eye to see the CWH back in the air in such great numbers. I can't believe how much is going on in the Ontario / Quebec area these days and I think this is becoming a warbird renaissance of sorts... I can't wait to see what the next few years bring!

A great time as always..here are a few of my pics. Still getting the hang of the new camera..I know I can get clearer inflight shots than this. As you can see, I love getting a shot just as the engine catches with that big belch of smoke..

One question, does anyone know what was up with the T-28 on Saturday? (not sure whose it is) He departed, then came back around on an extremely short final, cutting off a 727 that was on final. Those of us on the balcony assumed he must have declared some sort of emergency.

Cheers!

Steve
