Tom,

The Cougar is at Moton Field in Tuskeegee, Alabama. The F-84F is/was at Mercer Field near Calhoun, Georgia. The photo was taken in 2004.

The F-84 has been removed from Mercer. I think the F-8 and F-86D have been removed as well. The T-33 was there the last time I overflew the field.

The field is immediately adjacent to I-75. It has been (or will be - don't know the status) taken under imminent domain and will be turned into an exit ramp off of the interstate...

I have these airframes noted in the Locator as belonging to the Mercer Air Museum...
http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/Locator.php ... r%20Museum

Is the museum closed?

The airframes I have listed there are...
10+: A-7, C-131, F-84, H-34, L-17, L-21, T-29, T-33, U-8, F8U

So there was a F-86 there as well? The F-8 is gone? When did they leave. Is there anything else there?

Walt,

Thanks for the info! It always surprises me when I see planes in this condition. After looking at the reqs and regs a museum has to go through to get a plane on loan from the USAF or Navy it amazes me that anyone would let them go this far.

here's a post from last July when I stopped by the field:

...not much left, especially if the F-84 is gone now. The "museum" looks like there hasn't been much activity there in a LONG time.

Mercer Field was one of those really strange places. I used to live about 40 miles south of there, in Marietta, and would stop by Mercer every so often. I never did find anyone there. The field was owned by a guy that operated a trucking company that specialized in transporting large boats, and I remember once seeing a Bonanza parked at the strip, but that's the only sign of activity I ever saw in my visits there.

If anyone can confirm what is left on-site that would be fantastic. Given the time I would go out of my way to view one airframe and I am sure there are others as well. However I would like to update the Locator to confirm the actuals. I don't want anyone using the Locator to be sent off on a wild goose chase either.

Mike,

I'm going through that area the first week in July, so if no one has done it in the meantime, I'll take a look and report on what's there.

I made a low pass over Mercer this afternoon. What remains is:

One H-34.

One C-131.

One T-33.

One swept wing F-84.

From memory, the following airframes have been removed from the field over the last 5 or 8 years:

Two C-47's. Both flew out. At least one of 'em didn't get far (20 miles) before requiring 2 engine changes.

Two U-3/L-27's.

One F-8 Crusader

One F-86D.

One pole mounted Mace Missile.

One H-34.

Thanks for the follow-up!

I have a note indicating a T-33 was removed by May 2007. Since you are noting there is a T-33 on-site now, is it possible they had two T-33s at one point?
