Stumbled across these in a post on an armored vehicle board...lots of underwater shots of various aircraft.

That's the infamous TBD that Dave Tallechet was fighting to be able to recover. The shots were taken during one of the dives to retrieve a piece of the plane to use in court to make a claim to it. Sadly (criminally?) there she sits waiting to dissolve away. :cry:

That would be the Naval Histerical Center....Sombody declared that belly button polish was HAZMAT so they quit useing it.....blindness set in shortly thereafter.

champlin offered 50 grand for the location of the site, but the navy nixed it. and their it still sits as the salt water destroys it by the second.

Just wondering...

What are the legal steps, involved in passing a law that allows the recovery and ownership of ex-naval aircraft and possibly vessels if someone actually has money? Im talking about private ownership of course, that entails the recovery, restoration, and flight of these aircraft. And then the sale of these aircraft, to newer owners as the years progress. Museums and organizations would also be thrown into the mix as well.

Thats how it should happen in my opinion.

But is there a main, singular figurehead in Washington responsible for not allowing the recovery of these aircraft? Or is thier a board that voted on this desicion?

It's quite simple (please note the implied sarcasm in my writing). Any member of Congress, whether Representative or Senator, may introduce a piece of "private legislation." Such legislation applies only to a single person or entity, and does not apply as broad, universal law. The law can be a stand-alone bill, or it can be an amendment to another bill. A great example of such a private law that worked and resulted in a Brewster-built Corsair now being slowly restored can be found in the 2005 Defense Department Appropriations Act, enrolled as Public Law 108-375. To save you the trouble, in Title X of the act is this law:

SEC. 1083. TRANSFER OF HISTORIC F3A-1 BREWSTER CORSAIR AIRCRAFT.

(a) Authority to Convey.--The Secretary of the Navy may convey,
without consideration, to Lex Cralley of Princeton Minnesota (in this
section referred to as ``transferee''), all right, title, and interest
of the United States in and to a F3A-1 Brewster Corsair aircraft (Bureau
Number 04634). The conveyance shall be made by means of a deed of gift.
(b) Condition of Aircraft.--The aircraft shall be conveyed under
subsection (a) in its current unflyable, ``as is'' condition. The
Secretary is not required to repair or alter the condition of the
aircraft before conveying ownership of the aircraft.
(c) Conveyance at No Cost to the United States.--The conveyance of
the aircraft under subsection (a) shall be made at no cost to the United
States. Any costs associated with the conveyance and costs of operation
and maintenance of the aircraft conveyed shall be borne by the
transferee.
(d) Additional Terms and Conditions.--The Secretary may require such
additional terms and conditions in connection with a conveyance under
this section as the Secretary considers appropriate to protect the
interests of the United States.


If you know a particular aircraft that you want or believe that you should rightfully have title to, and you happen to be able to persuade your congressman that you're right, and he/she introduces the bill, Congress can just give you the aircraft. As I said... It's quite simple, really. :D

But yeah, I bet it's an uphill battle! I salute the people who are able to dedicate so much to recovering these aircraft and then have to fight (inside are own political system) to own them.

If you are talking about "Blackjack", then yes there are more pictures in there, scattered around. Due to the site being for an underwater photo competition, there really isn't any rhyme or reason to the order of the photos; they are simply listed by the photographer.

Having said that, there are less pleasant ways to pass the time than by looking at all the pics, both the 2002 and 2003 pages. There are lots of aircraft to be seen, and the ship wrecks are OK too.
