B-24 survivors serials

Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:24 pm

I just got the new Warbird Digest with the feature story on Ol'927 and the followup story on the surviving B-24's.
In the full USAAF serial numbers the production block and place of manufacture are also included. CO is obviously Consolidated-duh. FO is Ford Willow Run. What about CU? Curtiss? How about CF? Short for CCF?

Doug,

CO=Consolidated San Diego
CF=Consolidated Fort Worth
FO=Ford Willow Run
DT=Douglas Tulsa
NT=North American Dallas

I don't know of any B-24s that were constructed by Curtiss, but CU was their designator.

SAF, Thanks for the clarification. The one a/c with 'CU' designator in the serial is probably a typo. It's the 'Grumpy' nose at Virginia Air & Space Museum, one of Dave Tallichet's airframe recoveries. The production block # and numerical serial seem to follow in sequence of Consolidated San D. production. RE B-24D-60-CO 42-40461, Tallichet's other partial airframe.
This issue of WD filled in a lot of blanks for me on B-24 history.
