I agree with Joe, it looks like a DO-217, a K or later based on the redesigned forward fuselage which did away with the stepped windscreen. Source - Warbirds of the Third Reich by William Green

Dave,

I just noticed the thin rear fuselage area . . . . not a He-177.

Wishful thinking though, the 177 was one of my favorites : )

I agree. Thats definetly a Dornier Do-217K-2. These Do-217's carried the Fritz X missiles, which proved to be quite effective against enemy shipping. According to William Green's book, Warplanes of the Third Reich, the Do-217K-2's of KG 100 succeeded in hitting the Italian battleships Roma and Italia on 9 September 1943 with the Fritz X missiles. They were active in opposing the Salerno landings throughout the following week, scoring hits on the cruiser USS Savanna, several supply vessels, and also caused serious damage to the HMS Warspite. In January 1944, Do-217K-2's sank the cruiser HMS Spartan and the destroyer HMS Janus.

Checked my reference, the HE-177 Greif is close but if you can find some line drawings of both you will see the difference. The He had a much longer fuselage forward of the wing then the Do-217K. My first thoughts were that it was a He but figured out differently.
