367th FG 1945. The pilot was WIA but made it out OK.

When you consider that most USA a/c used 50 caliber and Brit's used (largely) .303, you appreciate the difference in damage a 20mm round can do with this picture.

Knowing the size of a 20mm, and looking at that canopy, it is pretty amazing that the pilot was only wounded.

i have a p 47 wind screen & the armored center screen glass is at least a 1/4 inch thick, a testimonial to the glass maker's expertise. if that hit came into 1 of the side panels that pilot's melon would have been blown off.
