This has got to rank as one of the most expensive restorations on record. Wow, the amount of work and number of folks working at one time - it makes me even more amazed at the amount of work Gary is doing on Diamond Lil - I promise if I lived closer to Midland I'd be there every chance I got to help with sweeping or what ever.

welll... they spent $26M on restoring their DC-6, so you can imagine the sort of detail they put into their projects. Nelson's crew are miracle workers too... I have always been amazed at their skills, and the pace of their work.

Is it really possible to spend that much on a single restoration?

What has been the most expensive Mustang restoration? I've heard of 5 mil. for Miss Marylin (sp?). I bet Paul Allen topped that with Upupa Epops. I'm just curious.

When it's completed, it will be done to a level that not even the Lockheed engineers could have done.

It'll certainly be shinier! Hardly a stock aircraft though, so we're not really comparing like with like - the finished result will have more similarities to a Learjet than an operational wartime P-38.

I suppose this fits the old adage of "Cheap, fast and correct" - you choose two of three and the results will follow!

I like it. I was never a big fam of the paint scheme that it wore. I know that it was Lefty's aircraft, but it was only painted that way, becasue the CAF had all of their airplanes painted white at one time. I say go for the cool restoration, and the high polish.

Interesting T-shirts worn by the shop crew showing project progress and goals (visible in the website progress shots). Obviously good for inspiration and motivation!

My thoughts exactly :?

Although, the Red Bull B-25 is polished metal finished with only the Red Bull logo under the cockpit on each side. So it's not as garish as the Sea Vixen above.
