Last night I watched a really good show on PBS called Secrets of the Dead, Dogfight over Guadalcanal. About the dogfight between James "Pug" Southerland and Saburo Sakai. The show featured computer graphics as wall as a real Zero and FM-2. Show also had Barrett Tillman and Justan Taylan in it.

Anyone seen this?

Here is the link to the show.

It was a good episode. Great animations and flying sequences.

It was discussed here when it first aired. Air & Space also did an article about the dog fight.

The only real sticking point was the "jammed guns" theory. While one gun may have jammed the wild cat still had several more machine guns that could have kept working...I think they just tried to wrap it up neatly for the show.

I always thought he had a problem with his trigger mechanism. He'd been shot full of holes by the time he got in position to fire, so it may simply have been a shot up trigger linkage somewhere.
