I had a good friend that flew the Mistel on one operational mission. He was the only KG200 pilot that flew them to survive. The concept worked fairly well, but to little to late thankfully.

The Mistel concept was under test from 1941 onwards... in fact, the Space Shuttle/747 transport method owes something to those "nutty Krauts" who first came up with the idea. And the 162 actually handled very well, so long as the wings stayed on!!! :shock: :shock: :shock: The glue which the Germans were forced to use to bond the wooden airframe components was very acidic, and ate way the very structure it was supposed to hold. Whoops. Aside from that, though, it was one hell of a hotrod.

I think 'White 23' is the aircraft in store at NASM.
Pity they didn't save a Mistel :cry:

I think you'll find the idea had been around long before 1941, the British had the Short Mayo combination for example (Mercury and Maia)
