I'd have to dig through my references, but I believe that was one of several 8th AF tests of the feasability of adapting the Bell power-boost gun mount to the B-24 (the same unit used in the tail of the B-26 Marauder.) I'm just guessing, but it was probably an attempt to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics without sacrificing firepower.
