As a kid, our family spent many a Sunday afternoon visiting airports, as so many families did back then. This was circa 57-61, and a few of the more interesting sites I remember were: going to a model airplane show at Dallas NAS, and walking across the runway with my dad to a boneyard where, in the weeds, were many Maulers, Avengers and Corsairs; going to a small airport in Garland, Texas, where a B-25 seemed enormously big compared to everything else there, including the little airport; and going to see the B-17s stored at Love Field. These of course were later used in The War Lover. What was really interesting about this was that between the road and the Forts, there was an aircraft parts storage area, and among the many WWII parts was a row of Marauder glass noses. If only we would have known how rare these would be today.
Anyone else take the Sunday family drive to airports back in those days?
