Gen Esinhower said after the war, a list of 5-8 things (C-47, landing craft, ?) that were a major part of winning the war for the US. Does anyone know the list?

I know there was a bunch of other stuff, but, barring the nuke, Curtiss was getting the job freakin done. It would have ended with all of Japan gone (Curtiss's way), or the way it actually did.

Not part of the list, but I'm thinking the blood of the veterans was a big factor.

I think the M1 Garand was another....uhhh wait a second...maybe it was Patton that said that. Oh well...it was still important since we were the only country to have a semi-auto rifle as standard issue.

IIRC, I thought Eisenhower also credited the landing craft that made the Allied invasions possible.

I think swiss has it right. I thought that it was the bazooka, the Jeep, the C-47, and the Atomic bomb. There have been several versions of this speech. Another good one that I heard was from Andy Rooney. He said,"If you had a contest between the B-17 and the B-24, the B-24 would more than likely win most of the contests. But if I had to choose between going on a mission over Germany in a B-17 and a B-24, I would choose the B-17 every time. The B-17 is kind of like a baseball player that you like. He is good, there are others that are better. But you just like this one for some reason."

I would also like to add all the soldiers, airmen, sailors that gave their lives so that freedom could be free.

If I'm not mistaken (and I RARELY AM ) Eisenhower said it was the Higgins boat, the C-47, and the jeep.

Unity of purpose among the American populance for one.

They say wars are always good for the economy. During the 1940's, that lent itself almost entirely to the manufacturing industry in direct support of the war itself. These days, the great king of American industry is the Free Media. They hold more sway over public opinion and belief than any other source or influence. Unfortunately they've determined it's more profitable to pimp "spin" and pluck dollars out of the resulting dust cloud, rather than unite the country in a common direction.

As long as the "soap opera" of pop media has the power to make you sit through the commercial breaks, all topics will remain fair game for exploitation and perversion at the expense of all greater good, including the imperitives necessary to keep this country united in a time of war. There was plenty of political debate during WWII, but it never affected the combined desire of the country to back the war effort. Whereas unified will was required of the people during WWII; today the exact opposite is required to keep people tuned into the media circus, thus increasing their exposure to commercial directives and reinforcing our greatest of national super powers - our spending habits.
