The Washington B.1...

I was surfing around for stuff and found this.
Never heard of it.
Did the Brits keep any or did they all come back to the US?

According to the good Mr. Baugher, 87 were loaned to the RAF. 85 were returned, and two were given to the RAAF.

Why they scrapped them, of course! Fellow WIXer Matt Grigg has a few pieces off them in his collection, and the MLG and other assorted bits from one of them also survive in a small museum down there.

I know the Russians and Chinese built nice copies. I have read that the engine copies are a lot better too...for cold climates and such things as roller pushrods and other things inside I know little of...

What did we do with our B-29s?

We called them the A76 Boeing Washington, and their fates were:

A76-1 (44-62049) Arrived in Australia 23/09/52, A76-1 not taken up. Used by ARDU for Testing/trials. Storage 16/05/56. Struck off 05/09/56. Sold for scrap, 23/10/56. Scrapped Tocumwal (NSW) 09/57.

A76-2 ( 44-61963) Arrived in Australia 12/12/52, A76-2 not taken up. Used by ARDU for Testing/trials. Struck off 05/09/56. Sold for scrap 18/01/57. Scrapped Edinburgh (SA) 10/57

Ok maybe the Chinese didn't build a copy but maybe they used TU-4's from Russia.

This Russian built Tu-4 was modified with turboprops and is located at the National Air Museum near Beijing, China. From what I've read it was used as an AWACs testbed. Pretty cool!

The way I understood it, the TU-4 had many engineering flaws, the most serious being with the radial engines...have never heard anything about the turboprop versions. I could very well be wrong, though....
