Is there any truth to the rumour that the CF is seeking Attack helicopters? If so, why would they not consider AH-1s surplus from the US ARMY?

Cobras are a (IMO) bad choice unless you're talking about the USMC's twin engined versions. The single-engined Army versions were so heavy from avionics upgrades that they were unable to fly with full fuel and a full weapons load.

Even the latest versions of the AH-64 are getting pretty portly compared to the original A-models -- for exactly the same reason: the addition of more electronics.

I have heard from reliable sources that remaining U.S.Army Cobras have been scrapped.

If you're gonna go Cobra then ya gotta go AH-1W "Whiskey" or AH-1Z "Zebra"

These Choppa's have attained the Zen state of "BAD ASSNESS"

The Canadian Armed Forces are going ahead with the acquisition of H-47s. From what I understand attact helicopters are being considered for escort purposes.

Do you want to find locations of displayed, stored or active aircraft? Then start with the The Locator.
Do you want to find or contribute to the documented history of an aircraft? If so then start with the Airframes Database.

I did not believe that the CH-47 were to be used as escorts? I thought they were troop and equipment transport>? The last thing I heard (although only rumour) was that the CF was considering Bell 412's with some Ball$..... I went looking and here is what I found

http://www.sfu.ca/casr/mp-ch146kandahar.htm

This truly adds to the rumour mill ......

No, what Mike said is that some escort choppers will be needed for the H-47.

The Canadian Coast Guard has been using attack helos for years, ever since they got the security function added to their mandate! From Search and Rescue to Search and Destroy!

Seriously, I haven't heard anything but it would make sense. If Canada intends to continue sending in troops to areas of conflict, it needs aircraft suited to support ground troops. My guess would be much like the SFU site says which is a armed version of the CH146. They already have them so the biggest cost would be the intergration of the weapons and safety systems as opposed to an entirely new aircraft which would require a whole new infrastructure to support and operate them.

Maybe DND can buy up a couple used A-10's instead !!

Brian....

Brian....[/url]

Now we are talking !!!!!

Seriously, would it not be viable to buy up the tooling (if it still exists) to remanufacture "new A-10Cs?" OK OK OK I know way too far out of the box. But hell there was a civilian group that wanted to turn some into waterbombers!!!! I think it was www.firehogs or something (Yes the .com will apparently take you to a porrnn site ...THANKS FOR CHECKING BLR <<<HE SAYS HE DOES NOT WORK THERE .....Sure, he probably owns it)

http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16726

BTW *BLR great pic of the cobra ..... At least our coastgaurd would look like they have teeth if we had them, but you know the Government would probably only allow the CG to put laser tag systems on and blow horns playing Stompin’ Tom Connors"*that good ol' hockey game!!! ".... That should scare anyone away from the Canadian Shores!!
