Aviation museum to move fighter down Ga. 247
Traffic on Ga. 247 near the Museum of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base will be disrupted for about an hour Wednesday morning as a historic fighter jet is moved back to the museum.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., according to museum officials, the aircraft - a British Lightning Mark 53 - will be towed along the road to the museum after receiving a new paint job at the base.
The move from the aero club gate to the museum will block traffic intermittently in the northbound and southbound lanes for about an hour, officials estimated.
The restored aircraft will be put on display in front of the museum near Hangar One.
British Lightnings served with the Royal Air Force as interceptors and ground attack aircraft from 1968 to 1988. It was the Royal Air Force's first supersonic fighter and the last fighter entirely of British design and manufacture, according to the museum.
The aircraft was painted by museum aircraft maintenance personnel with help from the Robins C-130 paint facility team.
