The author later clarified in his posts afterwards that he wasn't sure the gun was actually drawn, only that the LEO unlocked the holster and had his hand on the weapon.

Considering that when the cops were called they're not 100% sure what this guy is or what he is doing after having crossed an active taxiway and possibly runway, I would think it would have been a smart idea to treat this as a possible felony takedown (i.e. the guy may fight you) because for all they know, even if the guy isn't a terrorist, he might have a death wish or want to do something stupid (like run back across the taxiway and/or runway).

I'm not one of those guys who always apologizes for LEO actions, but having several relatives and friends who are LEOs, they have constantly reminded me that cops for the most part are trained to pretty much assume the worst of everyone until proven otherwise. It's simply a matter of self preservation. If you assume everyone might have a concealed weapon, then you are prepared (mentally and physically) if they really do. It is much easier to step down from that high state of alert and preparation than it is to ramp up to it at the last second. The problem is some LEO's don't "step down" and that's when the trouble starts.

Who knew this thread would be even better than the Stockton TSA bash?

I'm eagerly awaiting the next one. Is there any truth the rumor that TSA has purchased the Swamp Goat for display in their headquarters lobby?
Could the TSA have been the gunman on the grassy knoll? What does the TSA have against Fr0gs?

Yeah, I see what happenned and why the reaction. But as we say in french, too much of something is like not enough ! In this case, airport security. And bad jugement in the part of the photographer.

Aaaah, the sweet ol' days of reason, when people did not over-reacted...

WARNING: A little note of philosophy follows (and excuse my bad english): Balance and moderation tastes so much better !

Anyway...

I'll take the hit on this guys....... I was there, in the hangar checking in riders for flight #2. MY mistake for not thinking ahead and assigning a Sqdn member to be the photogs' conjoined twin. It WILL NOT happen again. Yes, I am already missing a chunk-o-rump. I was the Sqdn Officer on the ground as the Ops Officer was flying "Ol' 927." Alan

OK...
After carefully reveiwing the facts it looks like it's 1/4 Gary's fault for restoring the bird, 3/4's Al's fault for letting the nimrod photog wander across an active runway and we STILL need to SOMEHOW blame the TSA because they should have tazed the LEO for not shooting the nimrod photog!

More twists than an episode of MacGyver I tell ya!

:D

And probably ought to ZAP Al on general principle!

Way before 9-11 (1980ish), I was taking a picture of a T-33 in front of a National Guard Base while standing on a public sidewalk. I even asked the gate guard if it was ok..it was by him until the base commander called to shoe me away....

Prior to 9-11, most bases that had displays would even let me inside the gates to take pictures (Much to my wife's dismay.....) of their gate guardians.

Wow! Sorry I missed this thread...I was on vacation last week...

Mod hat off....
So after reading it from the begining...I was very agitated during the first two pages...ready to launch into a tirade and include some of my own airport Nazi experiences....then I was confused by the seemingly contradictory evidence of the incident. Then Doug piped in and let us know the truth of the matter without the Dallas Observer  Twist... I again turned to anger at the doofuss photog...it is guys like that that make it hard on all of us around airports. GRRR....

Thanks Doug!

Sorry that Alan had to loose a pant size because of this azz photog.

I still hate what bad/stoopid people have done to our world and I am still on board for a complete TSA overhaul/scrapping....but not because of this incident.

Mod hat on....
Thanks all for not letting this thread go completely ballistic.

The whole B-24/photog thing...

Well some confusion could have been avoided if the title had been edited to reflect the true situation after all the FACTS came to life.

Instead it still says 'Man arrested blah blah blah'. So anyone who sees it either has to read thru the many pages like you did Zane or they can just jump to the end and start their Gestapo annectdotes.

:D

You too Fotobass :D Thanks for seeing through the maze.

This thread is up to 7 pages now. Could this be the record for "Much Ado about Nothing" threads.

Oops...that didn't come out right. Made me look kinda whiney, didn't it?

I wrote what I thought was a PM, then discovered, much to my surprise, that it was a regular post.
