This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Jimmy Buffett didn't buy N48550 from Larry Teufel until September 2009 - although he had been leasing it periodically before that. As a homage to Jimmy Buffett, I think that's a bit of a stretch and an inside "joke" that not too many people would get.
Yeah, it would be interesting to know what it was. The AN-2 was from Alaska and the N number has its' origins in Alaska, which is also an interesting parallel. I can gaurantee that there is symbolizm of some sort behind the N number.
You can find the aircraft in its' non-movie markings on

You can put a "muffler" on a piston engine, but rotor blades are going to beat the air (into submission) regardless of any little button in the cockpit, don't you agree?
I used to think that, but I guess that is no longer true, Eurocopter has something called Blue Edge

That's pretty cool, Scott, but you have to agree (IMHO) that it neither existed in 1986 nor is it activated by a "little button in the cockpit", right?
I gotta wonder if the angled leading edge of the Blue Edge blades makes them stiffer and therefore makes the whole helicopter more maneuverable, too. Unintended but beneficial side-effects are nice!
Quite a while ago, I think it was in FLYING magazine, I saw an article about the "new" Lear 31A (I think that was the one) with its "new" ventral delta fins and there were some details about the new "sharks tooth" leading edge devices that they came up with after first trying traditional fences, saw-tooth leading edge notches, etc. The comment that really stuck with me was that they didn't know why in particular the "sharks tooth" LED's worked so well (compared to the other devices) and they summarized it by saying that "aerodynamics" is STILL pretty much a form of "black magic."

There's a lot of inside jokes in films. The registration on the Waco float plane in Raiders of the Lost Ark is C-3PO!

Heavy Metal! My 11 yr old caught me watching that so I had to back it up so he could watch the whole thing...even he went.hey wait a minute!!! Having crawled through Ol 909 a few weeks ago, he was a little confused by the movie's interior layout, crew positions and the size of the ball turret! (room for two men...well, one man and a zombie, to have a fight!!!!) He kept saying "wait a minute"! Back it up, play it again....

I am sure that there is stuff that they got wrong, but I always thought that Flight of the Intruder did a pretty good job. They atleast did some homework rather than just slap something together as some of the other aviation films of that time period did.

Speaking of "Space" movies, why is it that the spaceships burn when hit or flame comes out of explosions? I thought space was a vaccum?

Or the fact that you hear explosions in space at all. Of course if you didn't hear them, it wouldnt be a very exciting movie now would it?

Probably the same way that rocket motors work in space - they carry their own oxidizer. When ruptured, they vent their internal atmosphere which feeds the flames. Besides, if I remember my freshman Astronomy class correctly, "space" is not a perfect or absolute vacuum; the pressure is just very very VERY low.

I don't remember the name of the movie, it might have been a James Bond film or Navy Seals film, but how about the HALO jumps out of the back of a C-130 where only the jumpers are on oxygen?
