TIGHAR is expanding the mission of its 2014 underwater search for Amelia Earhart’s aircraft to include vital ocean science data collection. We have broadened the scope of this expedition because the craggy underwater mountainside that may hold the wreckage of the Earhart plane also holds the answers to questions far more important than what happened to Amelia. The unexplored depths off Nikumaroro contain information crucial to understanding climate change, the most serious environmental challenge of our time.

So this could indicate their research goals go beyond Amelia...

They have officially "jumped the shark"...they have figured out how to milk more money from folks and probably the government...by holding out the promise of helping the environment (a sure way to get blank checks from well meaning, but often inexpert, folks).

Certainly they're not airplane experts, so I guess they're now environmental experts.

If this doesn't pan out, they'll suggest they're "Real close" to curing cancer...all they need is another $3 million....

Yes, I'm cynical.

I've listened politely to their nonsense for years, but now they're trying my patience.

I say let Earhart and Noonan RIP.

On another note- has anyone seen Ameilia Rose Earhart, the 21-year-old that will fly a PC-12 on the 1937 route? Sounds cool, but have you seen her? Hubba. Hubba!

You know the reason they can't locate Amelia and her plane... It was crushed under the B-32 Dominator when it landed on the moon...

Hmmmm. So now TIGHAR is set to do high-level climate change science. In peer-reviewed international science journals I presume. They really should be posting their academic credentials. To be making such a statement they must have quite an assemblage of experienced Ph.D. scientists from diverse fields of study. Either that, of they have not the slightest clue of what they are talking about...

They haven't been able to manage peer-reviewed aviation archeology either, so it's no real stretch in protocols.

About a week ago a bunch of tiggers including the big man himself fell for a fake news story on FACEBOOK (lol) about MH370. ROFL. Such great comedy. The gift that keeps on keeping on. pop2

I wish one of these experts could tell me what todays weather would be like if it weren't for climate change.

"31 years-old", but yes; very hot.

I knew she couldn't be related to the original.... :P

For those trying to piece together the hubbub about the hoopla...

Hmm?...
That aluminum scrap and rivet pattern matches up to the access panel on my furnace.

Regarding the Miami Newspaper article: I've read bits and pieces about the Betty Klenck issue, nothing definitive though. Does anybody have an update on this aspect of the Earhart disappearance?

Geez-Louise! Don't they ever give up?

So they found a piece of aircraft metal, with great publicity (anyone remember the article in LIFE?) that this came from AE. But the rivet patterns do not match a Lockheed. So this must be a REPAIR added to the aircraft by a non-Lockheed approved, and non documented, event during the flight. That claim has been pretty seriously dismissed, but a GLINT OF METAL in a photograph adds new life to that explanation...

What TIGHAR needs is a piece from the manufactured airplane, not something that MIGHT have been subsequently added. The possible repair without any remains of the original Electra begs a question.

What is really disappointing here is that the press is not using any kind of skeptical thinking in their analysis of the story. AND TIGHAR, NOT AE, IS THE STORY. While searching for the Nungesser and Coli aircraft in Maine years ago, TIGHAR became famous for jumping to conclusions. (One story I heard, and I am a scientist based in Maine, was that they found a seashell, and were pounding on doors at the local university to determine that this seashell came, as it must have been from, FRANCE). The piece of metal is another of numerous great examples of conspiracy thinking, instead of good application of Occam's Razor (the explanation that relies of fewer assumptions is more likely). The metal piece is more likely to be explained by any of a thousand possibilities than to be from the Electra. This, however, does not get stated, and the reader is led to believe that Ric Gillespie is the genius that he advertises.

There is a good subject for a book, if anyone has the time and talents.

Ole Ricky must be running out of cash. Global warming and new AE evidence in the same week.

Prediction: he will have just as much success finding global warming as he has AE.
