For those interested in the details of HMS Hood's remains, there's a discussion of the wreck and a photo essay from the first Mearns expedition here:
http://www.hmshood.com/hoodtoday/2001ex ... /index.htm

Hood was wrecked in a massive explosion, during normal (rough) Atlantic weather, rather than the exceptional Titanic sinking in a calm sea. HMS Hood's remains consists of three heavily damaged chunks of wreckage, and two debris fields, at about a mile depth. There's an extensive literature on deep sea shipwreck decay, and most of it from people who aren't proven frauds.

As I said before, what is important is HMS Hood's wreck is, rightly, a war grave, whatever people may believe or not believe is there.

Regards,

I would say there are loads of bones in and around the wreck.
A bloke I work with does deep wreck diving and has dived on Japanese warships from WW2 and there are bones everywhere, I've seen the pics.
The German liners sunk in the Baltic in 1945 have been dived on as well and the wrecks and seafloor are covered in bones.

ANYWAY. So what happened when the live feed was lost Friday? They lose the ROV? Did they get the bell?

After being delayed several days by weather, another attempt at recovering the bell is planned for tomorrow (Tuesday, August 28 2012).

Hey guys, excellent thread! I'm looking at Paul Allen's little yacht anchored outside the harbour of downtown Reykjavik. The weather is pretty sugar blowing out of the north, cold as hell. The conditions might be a tad outside of their comfort zone. I'm leaving for the US mid-day Friday. If the yacht leaves before then, I'll keep you posted. 8)

Smiles,

I understand that he is such a fanatic of the history of the Hood that his Yacht now sports a large mockup of the Hood's bell, inclusive of corrosion of the brass.

Seperately, the recovery of the real Ships Bell from the wreck is now confirmed, and it has recently been handed over to RN representives for safe keeping.

A surprise to all was that this bell significantly differs from typical Royal Navy Ship's bells of the period in being a lot smaller, not being cast of solid brass, and not showing UK foundry markings.

On its display by Mr Allen after its recovery, it was found instead to be simply made of brass plated pressed metal, carrying a "made in China" label, and most strangely, instead of having the name "HMS Hood" embossed on it as was to be expected, it confusingly carries the engraved marking of "S.S. Octopus" - :axe:

Mr Allen was most pleased to hand it over to the Royal Navy, as he ushered them quickly off his Yacht, muttering he had some polishing to do.

(And of course No disrespect is intended to the memory of the Crew of the Hood, in this jovial dig at Mr Allen, and my admiration for his true efforts.)

Smiles

During one visit to DC I had the time and opportunity for a little sight seeing. My first visit was to the Navy Yard and the museum there. One item displayed is the bell from the Prinz Eugen. I got back on train and went over to the Smithsonian and saw the bell from the USS Franklin. Two ships that interest my and two ships I will never see, yet seeing the ship's bells had a powerful effect on me. On my way back to the hotel I also visited Arlington National Cemetary.

Recovering the bell of HMS Hood is the right thing to do. Somehow a ship's bell embodies the spirit of the ship and those who served aboard. The sailors aboard the Hood paid a heavy price in the fight against an evil regime and their sacrifice should be remembered.

I can't believe we're still discussing this. (Come to think of it, knowing some of the people here...I guess I can) :)
The recovery is authorized by the the MoD...the bell is going to a memorial.

It really can't get more legit than that.

If anyone's THAT squeamish...you better boycott the CAF Red Tail Mustang...after all (according to the FAA and data plate), it's the same plane that someone died in.

Doesn't matter if the the president, the USMC, the RAF, the RN or the eagle scouts authorize it. Being legal doesnt' change what it is. I'm sure some egyptian camel herder was happy to approve somebody digging up everything in the valley of the kings at some point as well.

Something was stolen from a grave.

The ship is (more or less) MoD property....something isn't stolen if you have permission to remove it.
Remind me never to borrow any tools from you. :)
