It was windy much of the week and they were really fighting to keep the tarps on. That process probably abraded the finish more than leaving them off would have, although they must have been some help against the rains. From what we could see under the tarps, the finish on that plane has deteriorated quite a lot since it was installed in the museum. Seems like it only spends 1 week per year outside when they need to clean out the eagle hangar to use as an auditorium, but either that week takes a harsh toll or it is deteriorating even inside. Anyway, it was depressing for those of us who saw it flying in the 80s.

If only they left the Eagle Hangar in tact for the week of Airventure so that members who like to see things like the 1/72nd scale USS Enterprise, P-51a, and Mosquito could see them not covered in tarps, behind curtains, or around corners. I was there the Friday before the convention, and those planes were outside already. I saw that Mossie fly in the past too, would love to again.

Did anyone happen to get a pic of the C-47 "Duggy" arriving on Sunday? The only reason I ask is because Rob and I were on it, and i thought it would be cool to see. Thanks

That's first class travel there, though I've never seen anybody deplane from under 3000 feet.

It will be a few weeks before I can get through all my pics, especially the better ones which are on film. But I have the first 57 posted to this gallery and will be adding many more.

Bear in mind it's a wooden aircraft with a fabric and dope covering; and I'm sure hardly watertight after all these years - so the tarps would actually have done some good, as long as they didn't just trap or conduct water into the structure.

Sad to think it'll never fly again in that form. :(

Given that they weren't waterproof in service - and note the canopy hatch above the main spar - I'm also sure it's well short of watertight.

On the subject of paint finish, the paint shop doing KA114 has a photo of a certain award-winning P-40 as their Facebook tiltle shot...

Thnaks for the photos everyone.

I was laughing the whole time, I usually only shoot a plane if it's topless (no canopy cover), but this took the swimcap to the extreme.

When did the Dash 8 come in? Just more proof that Oshkosh is so big you don't see it all.

Only got one of Duggie - I think it's during Monday's show. Kind of fuzzy:

Still sorting the rest - kind of like this one though:
