Mint,
Good shots as always.
Here are a couple P-47 pics I took last year at Thunder.
Looking forward to the 08 show.

Don't suppose its in the budget to get the Tora Tora, Pyro team out there for next year? Also are there any other pyro teams out there? I thought there would be more of a demand for something like this at shows?

I agree with Mudge - I don't think most of us hard core warbird fans on WIX are iinterested in seeing the Zero, Kate and Val "REPLICAS" fly around with simulated explosions, etc. We want to see real warbirds. I would rather pay as much or more for ONE really rare vintage warbird jet or prop plane to come and fly at T.O.M. then pay for the TORA TORA TORA act. Now if your talking about the general public or people who aren't seriously interested in vintage warbirds, that may be a different story.

Wow! Didn't know most of the hard-core fans didn't like the Tora scene. I still do. Well then how about a demo team then?

As far as a demo team, I will concede that the Blue Angels brought in more people and money to the Yankee Air Museum last year, but it detracted from what the Thunder Over Michigan Warbird show has come to mean as one of the premiere warbird shows, if not The premiere warbird show, in North America has come to represent. I would hope that a major military demo team like the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds will be a rare participant to T.O.M. Modern Single plane demos are okay if LIMITED, maybe no more than one or at most two of the demos and then only if the demo aircraft like an F/A-18, F-16 or F-22 are there to perform in a Heritage or Legacy Flight with vintage warbirds.

Civilian Demo teams flying vintage warbird aircraft (probably generally no more than one in any show year) such as the Trojan Horsemen T-28 team, the Lima Lima T-34 Team, the Aeroshell T-6 Team, the Starfighters 3-Ship F-104 Team, etc. would be fine, since these are definitely in keeping with the show theme. Outstanding as they are, individual aerobatic demos such as Sean Tucker should be very limited participants at T.O.M. also.

Just some of my own thoughts and opinions. Some WIX members may agree, some may not.

Gee, Jim...ya' think? :D :D :D

I totally agree with your opinion about the military demo teams. I don't go to airshows to watch jets.

My personal favorites among vintage airplanes are the vintage classic jets from the 50s (F-86, T-33, FJ-4B, F9F, etc.) and the BIG Propliners (Super Connie, C-97, DC-4/6/7 types, Convairs, etc.), but I love the WWII airplanes also. Thunder Over Michigan (I have been to 3 so far - 2005 thru 2007) has come to symbolize to me a great warbird show that obviously has as its core the great restored WWII era prop planes, but always has a significant variety of great Post WWII vintage prop and classic jet warbirds. And it's a show where MOST of the airplanes there fly.

The single aircraft demos done by the military can be exciting but they have tended to be a little overdone in the air shows of the past 2 or 3 decades, and they are so prominently featured at many other shows and really don't need to be a major part of a great warbird show like T.O.M. (again - MY opinion).

I look forward to being in the Photo Pit again this coming August.

If we have our A-4 finished and the engine in our F86, eveyone but Mudge can come check them out! :D
Gotta love the round engine noise of a classic jet!

This is going to be tough on the airshows we might go to with the TA-4 and F-4. Are we going to have to tell the show organizers that they will have to screen their crowd at the gate for an errant Mudge ?

Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:14 pm

Maybe we can develop ear plugs or hearing protector/ear muffs that screen out jet noise and only let in the sound of roaring pistons.

Mudge - We aren't giving you a hard time............

Mudge,

It is with a heavy heart  that I respond to your indifference to winged fire-breathin' gadgets. Just know that as you work through this phobia we jet weinies will be here for you cheering for you to walk towards the bright light...waiting for you to cross over to the good side of the force along with other like-minded jet enthusiasts (see below) with open arms and stuff. In the meantime, our people will monitor you closely.
