Thanks so much for the update Taigh, didn't mean to be pushy for an update :). I just really enjoy reading your updates. You and your group are doing a great job.

You are not pushy at all Travis. I have been feeling guilty about being so delinquent with the updates. Bernie was razzing me saying the Harpoon thread is on page 8 ol' buddy and that I should get off my over-sized backside and post something.

Ill try to keep up with more regular updates but that darn paying work keeps getting in the way.

Hey Taigh,

I've been meaning to donate to the Harpoon and finally got around to it. I love what you guys are doing. Please keep up the good work! I will be posting a thread soon in the Maintenance Hangar about my work with the City of Savannah B-17 restoration. She'll be static only, but the crew here have been working really hard, and I'm honored to be a part of it. Best of luck with the PV-2, and please keep us all posted!

Matt

I want to thank you all for the recent donations to the Harpoon project.

Matt, Lynn and Clinton all made recent donations which are greatly appreciated. A lot of folks have donated time, materials and funds which all go to helping make the old girl more and more complete.

We now have the Preparation material (etch and alodine), primer and non specular sea blue paint just waiting to be applied. We have more airframe prep work as well as trying to find a good place to paint her. The search continues...

With your recent donations we are well on our way to funding the gun project. Here is the latest tally:

Image

We need 10 guns (8 for the gun nose and 2 for the Martin turret) at $2000 per gun which will secure not only one steel replica ANM2 aircraft gun but also gun mounting hardware (rear mounting post and front Lockheed trunion and Edgewater adapter), flexible ammo feed chute and an ammo box. We're getting there slow but sure because of all of the support!

Thank you all!

Great thread! Thanks for taking the time to post pics and updates.
Question: What is the thingee hanging down from the horizontal stab (circled in red in picture below)?
An antenna? Relief tube? Optical Illusion?

Best!

My guess: It looks a lot like the radar altimeter antennas that were also used on B-17s. Taigh? Am I close? Do I get a pony? geek

You got it! here is your pony:

One time when Bernie came out he asked what went there and I told him that they were mounts for the APN-1 radar altimeter. There is a transmitting and a matching receiving antenna on the other side. I showed Bernie a set of antennas and he attached them with screws.

Kids love to use them as chinning bars and since they are made out of copper they do not last at air shows without close supervision.

We may have to use that picture as the "Official WIX Pony" for our little guessing games!

As for keeping the little ruffians off of the "chin up bars" at air shows, perhaps you could make some kind of "Do Not Touch" signs or streamers (similar to the typical "Remove Before Flight" streamers) to hang on the antennas. Maybe add the word, "DANGER", to the signs to really scare 'em off. :D

Since its insulated I was thinking about hooking it up to a Ford coil and teaching some basic electricity!

I found it on Al Gore's interweb and it reminded me of the one Jack Cook came up with when he started the whole pony thing a while ago. It could be the same one...
