That's a good question. I suspect the Erickson team went with the later G-10/K-4 style streamlined cowlings because they allow more room than a standard 109 cowling; when the DB 603 supercharger was bolted on the stock DB 605 during the war, the port side engine bearer was significantly enlarged which required more space beneath the cowling. The right side received roughly the same treatment (although the cowls are not perfectly symmetrical- many folks don't realize this) so you have quite a bit of space to work with in there compared to, say, an Emil cowling which is quite tightly fitted around the crankcase of the DB 601.

Going from memory, which isn't always a good thing, the Merlin is only a little bit wider than the Allison at it's widest point up top, so I don't think you'd be able to pull together a similarly effective conversion for an Emil using a V-1710; you'd wind up with a hybrid cowling not unlike what you see on Buchons fitted with their Merlins.

Look at these two pictures, before and after. On the before, it appears that the landing gear legs are short, and squatty, whereas on the after, it appears that the landing gear legs are a lot longer. Is this a visual illusion, or are the landing gear completely identical between the two, not having been modified at all?

The shock struts are just flat in the first picture.

I think the difference is an illusion.
Contributing factors are, the height at which the photos were taken are quite different. Above the wing VS below the wing.
The Buchon chin is much lower where it meets the fuselage.
The struts may very well be deflated.

The Allison Gustav looks the business!
I really like the innovation and engineering that enabled this great mod.
I'd love to see some more video of it in action (hint, hint....)

The Israeli paint scheme was done for a documentary on the Mahal or foreign volunteers who flew for Israel in 1947-1949.

It was a good idea, it just didn't work.

I've seen the documentary on TV, very well done.

Last month I passed through Madras, saw the museum but it was closed.
Not too far from me, it will make a nice summer trip with the WAAAM right on the way.
