Let's think of it this way- maybe all the people who envy/enjoy the item would go out of their way to not be seen as jerks. Sorry, in my reality, as an aircraft owner, the public isn't that way. And from what I've heard about Mr. Greenwood (your experience excepted) the guy's gone out of his way to accomodate people with his airplane. But I'm sure he's not perfect like us L-5 owners, so maybe you should cut him some slack, take some estrogen pills, listen to some Enya music, and all get along.

You know, on reflection, most of the warbird owners aren't perfect, they just look that way to the wannabees... But you can always count on us Steely-Eyed, Barrel-Chested, Freedom-Fightin', Whiskey-Drinkin', Manly L-5 owners.

Mod post: OK, we are getting into personal attack territory here, and with at least one person not in a position to put their own view.

Scott Rose is the only person bigger than the website. Scott is the only person able to ban members. I'd hope everyone can appreciate Scott won't ban anyone without what he considers good reason.

I'm sure we all look forward to Bill getting his Spitfire back in the air (and there's nothing stopping him passing updates via a current member) and seeing the TAM Hurricane back in the air also.

Hoping people are going to turn out nice is... nice. Time to move on.

Thanks.

Yeah, best not to get into personal attack territory...
Some of the bitter remarks said about Bill in the past are offensive to me.
Bill is a good guy, and I thought I would just share the good news of what was happening.

Bill called me yesterday not to talk about the spitfire.
My wife has been feeling bad (sick for about a month), and he called to see if she is ok.
I have hopes that she will be getting better, and Bill called to offer support. That was nice of him to do...
That was the primary reason for the call.

Bill character is not in question for me. It is sad that it is in question for some here on WIX.
WIX is a great place, and if you guys want to talk about the Spitfire… we should do that…
Not about how someone might be a jerk, because he is not in my opinion.

Anyway, I feel it is good news about the aircraft. I don’t know details, but I hope that it will be in the sky soon!!!!!!
Best Regards,
-Paul

Mod post: Let's be absolutely clear here. Bill contravened several rules on WIX, and was asked to stop doing so but continued to do so. He was then banned, as warned, by Scott.

That is no question either of Bill's character or the facts above. I still have great respect for the rest of Bill's activities, and wish him all the best with his Spitfire.

Further discussion on the progress of Bill's Spitfire would be great. Further discussion - in any direction or form - regarding Bill isn't going to change anything, and I'd suggest is therefore left, please.

I don't want to have to lay out the evidence (which I have filed, including the pre- edited comments) to support the above statement of these contraventions as I don't feel it's fair as Bill can't put his point of view. This is now the forth time I've had to say this. I hope everyone can understand that I am not prepared to do so again.

Bill's Spitfire, great. Discussing banned ex- members, not really fair, so no.

Thanks for your understanding and adherence.

Back to warbirds.

To get this thread back on warbird track, I do have some questions.
As most can tell, I have a big interest in this type of aircraft.

My research into this type only shows about 20 Spitfires were converted from the single seat to the two-seat trainer.
This makes it very rare... Although all Spitfires are "rare".
With the recent auction of a similar model for a high amount, I would imagine that parts are quite expensive and hard to come by.

With the damages done, will it be more difficult to obtain parts for this type of aircraft?

PeterA??? would you know?
Regards to all!

I know those wooden props aren't cheap....and neither is a Merlin overhaul.

I cannot say for certain, but as I understand it, the biggest question is just the money and man hours it will take to fix it. I think most of the parts needed to get it back in the air can be found or fabricated easily enough. I'm sure there will be a few that turn out to be a bit of a headache, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

In regards to the banning, I think its pretty lame. While I haven't read every single one of my father's posts here, from what I understand, it was his arguing about politics that got him banned. From what I can tell, he didn't ever insult people or make anything personal, he just argued about politics a bit too much. I know the moderators here have the right to ban anyone from their site, but it seems pretty lame to me.

I post on a skiing website that is just about completely moderated. In order to get banned you have to be a spammer, or post highly offensive pictures. Theres a subforum set aside for people to argue about politics and every other silly topic, and no one gets their panties in a bunch.

Its just the internet, it's a great source of info, but its also just entertainment. Anyone that takes arguing on the internet seriously needs to get out of the house a bit more.

So if I say that I heard muddy boot's boots smell like poo, will that get me banned?

JDK, I am not sure what you are trying to pull by running your text in bright red (maybe that is how you folks slam "down-under"), but bottom line I am glad the Spitfire is being repaired, and I for one look very much forward to the day when Bill comes screamin' by the field with the Spitfire.

As for the Hurricane, no one including Bill (I am positive) would have ever wished the whole thing to have happened, not just to his plane but to any other plane, but the situation has been explained ad naseum, and now it is very much time to move on....

I will raise the first beer glass to you Bill when you fly on by ! and I look forward to a time when you are back on WIX

Can I play devil's advocate here?

21 were originally converted. Of those, the survivors are:

T.8
MT818

Tr.IX
MJ627
MJ772 (modified to appear as a single-seater)
ML407
ML417 (re-built to single-seat)
PV202/IAC 161
TE308

Since then, two Spitfires have been rebuilt as trainers (PT462 and SM520), while a third started off as a new-build project with original components added to the project (MH367).

I think there's at least two being rebuilt to twin-stick configuration at the moment....

+ BS410, under build at Airframe Assemblies Ltd on the Isle of Wight, UK, and photographed here a couple of weeks back.

This is basically a new aircraft incorporating recovered components and structure from a bail out crash near Amiens in France in 1943.

The pilot, Piotr Kuryllowicz, in his 90th year, re-acquaints himself with the cockpit.

Sorry, I did not know that. I could be wrong.
My source was here. And they show 20.

In 1946 Supermarine converted Mk. VIII MT818 into a two-seat trainer. The cockpit was moved forward 13 1/2" and
a second cockpit was added behind it with a separate sliding hood. The pupil sat in the front cockpit and the instructor in the rear.
MT818 first flew in this configuration in August 1946.

Twenty Spitfire IXs were converted to two-seat trainers for the following customers; 3 for Holland, 10 for India, 1 for Egypt and 6 for Ireland.

I bet PeterA would know for sure. (Oh I just see he responded... cool)
