This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Great story! It's always great to see veterans being reintroduced to their beloved aircraft. Whenever you see that, something comes over you that can't be described in words.

Jack,
If you take a look at the video posted by JBrawner there is some footage in the piece that was taken by the tv station during their media flight. I have not sat in the aircraft yet, but it appears as if visibility out the side of the aircraft is quite good. The early models of the Mustang did not have great visibility to the rear, that is why they went to the bubble canopy. You will not have any enemy fighters sneaking up on you (at least until the 262 flies) so rearward visibility is not all that important.

I logged about an hour in the cockpit this morning...making airplane noises and all...while it doesn't have the visibility of a D model, you can certainly see out of it with no problem. Let me tell you...it is one magnificent machine!!!

it was nice watching that lastnight... the gentleman in the cockpitt who was asking for the keys was at our school a few weeks ago for a lecture or something like that, i wasnt able to go because im not apart of the regular campus activities thanks to A&P program. but a treat for us was that the 2 tuskegee airman that were there for the event came down and wanted to see our program/hangar got them to sign my toolbox right on top of my WIX sticker

one was a pilot ( the gentleman in the cockpit in the vid) and the other was a crewchief for P-47's. anyways it was nice to see him on tv sitting in his favorite plane, i asked him when he was at our school.
on a side note the other gentleman(crewchief) who was at our school put in an application to work in our tool crib...... i sure hope he gets the job before im out of there in a yr.

OK Rich, I'm waiting for the sketch of exactly how you would make that work! Would the front one slide forward?

I never said it would be easy.

Jim, you all better have your rain buckets out for tomorrow. Another ideal for the people who ride in the Mustang, take a throw away camera with you and have the guy in front take your picture while in the back as you are rolling on the ground attack. They will make great wall art.

That's a great idea about the camera. I am going to suggest lipstick camera(s) in the cockpit. We'll see...it is flying alot. We have hangar space worked out for it here in Dallas...in fact with the projected storms forcasted we will probably hangar all of them. that H word has come up

She's earning her keep!! Without any advertising or pre publicity "Betty Jane" has been very busy. We are planning a photo shoot on the way to Tyler. I'll post some shots here next Monday. Although we have some fantastic air to air shots we want to get some with the Bombers.

That's great Jim. I'm glad she is doing well. The polish on that bird is amazing. I can't wait to see her and maybe go for a ride

I have a type rating for the P-51 but when my certificate was issued it was an LOA. A few years later the FAA renewed my certificate and put a VFR restriction on it since the LOA's did not require shooting instrument approaches at the time. I would be interested in buying some time if I could do the approaches and have this limitation removed.
Do you guys have someone on staff that can do this?
Thanks

Jack, Enough of the OD noise. I hold their franchise on Metall and Mothers to keep the shine!

(I wish) Beautiful aircraft! Congrats!

MarineAir:
You would need to have a Experimental Examiner on board to fly the approaches and remove the VFR only restriction. A warbird CFI could not do that. The FAA made it hard; the EAA is working to eliminate this dillema for everyone in the future.
