IIRC, the problems with the B-36 ferry flight generally involved the rapid deterioration of the many magnesium parts, and specifically exhaust leaks combined with fuel leaks to make the risk of in-flight fire unacceptably high. I wasn't there, just read it somewhere, I'll see if I can find my reference.
