P-Screamer, My brother was a small arms instructor at Lackland. I went to visit him for a couple weeks one summer late 60s, early 70s, & while I was there he took me to see the XC-99. I can remember the same deal about the coke machine & all. I also seem to remember there were bullet holes in the airplane where birds would roost & crap all over the place & the guy there would shoot at them. Man that airplane was huge! I think I still have the pictures from my visit somewhere. Its too bad the thing got in such bad shape before something got started to save it.

I had a guy tell me that he was involved with "stealing the XC-99. He said that Curtis LeMay sent he and the rest of a B-36 crew to Kelly. They supposedly went out to the plane, fired it up and flew it to Carswell ! The story was that LeMay figured he owned all of the B-36s so he figured he owned the XC-99 too. There was supposed to have been a big fight over it and LeMay reluctantly agreed to return it.

Don't know if this is true or not, just passin' it along. At least this story is more feasible than the Enola Gay story !
