A Lockheed PBO Hudson was the first U.S. aircraft to sink a German u-boat in ww2. Flew from Iceland. PBO is the Navy designation for the A-28/A-29 Hudson.

Nathan:
You are so correct regarding the PBO being the first US aircaft to sink a U-Boat. The sinking occured on Jan 28, 1942 by a VP-82 aircraft operating from RCAF Base Argentia, Nfld. Interestingly the VP-82 PBO's were aircraft originally destined for the RAF and retained the std British "sand and spinach" paint scheme. There is an outstanding article documenting the event in the Summer 2009 edition of the AAHS.
Unfortunatly the PBO is one key aircraft missing from the collection at the Naval air museum at Pensacola.

Wikipedia has the sinking of U-656 (that first US sinking of a U-Boat) as 1st of March 1942.
The Hudson was also the first RAF aircraft to shoot down a German aircraft, on the 8th of October 1939, over Jutland.
They were a very versatile aircraft type, considering they were a converted airliner. They even used them as fighters over Dunkirk.
Wikipedia says there were just 24 PBO-1's in the US Navy. The RNZAF alone had 96 Hudsons.
